In 1988, the insurance industry, through the Insurance Institute of South Africa, undertook to finance the Chair of Insurance and Risk Management at Wits. Support of the Institute, goes a long way to develop the skills in the market as a whole, making a larger pool of skilled insurance practitioners available to fill positions within in the industry. The company also agreed to sponsor a prize for the best paper in the general insurance section of the Certificate of Proficiency examinations and this support continued until 2005.
Zurich, among others, have been involved in providing support for the IISA Conference since 1994. Financial support is also provided each year for the annual banquets of SAFSIA, IIG and the IBC.
Another industry initiative, Proudly Insurance, also received support before operations ceased in 2006.
At present there are a number of ad hoc projects that receive support - these include both monetary contributions and goods in lieu of cash that are generally used as prizes for fund raising projects.
